Another Conversation With Zahid

I mention to Hampton Library’s manager, Zahid, the story of John Sheaf’s serendipitous find in Japan and he volunteers that he once found a lottery ticket in a library book and also five, £5 notes. Both were used as bookmarks. The notes were able to be returned to their owner via information from the library system, the lottery ticket however had fallen out of its book – so the owner was never found.

When I ask if Mickie, another member of library staff, if she has found anything unusual used as a bookmark, she says no, apart from an assortment of shopping lists. She herself, however, is in the habit of using used theatre tickets to mark her place in her current reading. I think about the odd assortment of things, I have placed in books: letters, postcards, lists, a train ticket, an airplane ticket, an empty envelope, a leaf…
